Remembering Paul Pontallier
In this blog post we would like to honour wine expert Paul Pontallier, who passed away on Sunday the 28th of March 2016, after an on-going battle with cancer.
We thank him for his passion for wine and his dedication to excellence.
When 27 year old Paul Pontallier entered the viticultural world in 1983 as the technical director of Bordeaux wine estate Chateau Margaux, the winery had experienced several setbacks. Formerly one of Bordeaux’s most renowned wineries from as far back as the 1600s, Chateau Margaux was close to closing when faced with an economic recession and the release of continuously bad vintages. However, 33 years later under the expert guidance of Paul, the estate was able to reclaim its place as one of the best wine producers in the world.
Lobster Ink had the honour of working directly with Paul Pontallier in 2013 while filming in the Bordeaux region. Beyond his exceptional knowledge of terroir, nose, and expression, we were inspired daily by his love for the region and his innovative approach to winemaking. And, even though he contributed greatly to the success of Chateau Margaux and the legacy of wine as a whole, he saw himself as a curator of something ‘bigger’ than himself.
We will remember him for his humble and generous hospitality, as well as his impassioned descriptions of Margaux’s wines
